Why are nomads a threat?

Why are transients negatively associated with fringe society, drug users, homelessness, and outlaws?

How do stereotypes negatively impact nomadic people?

How can nomads project a positive self image instead?

Examples:

  • Ibrahim and his lies. Nomads embarassed by their lifestyle as a result of contact with Europeans. How does ethnocentrism negatively impact the self esteem of cultures whose values did not include needing a permanent domicile and ownership of numerous possessions?

  • Adrian and his diversion with the court system. Getting custody of his two children, and being told he must have permanent residency, a permanent address, a domicile address, and legal alien status. Implications of stereotypes for this? Implications for nomads?

  • Anti-Tuareg Sentiments. We have determined that governments do not like nomads because they do not have a permanent" domicile or residence, so the whole reason they try to put up borders is because they are so intent on making you NOT nomadic.
  • The idea is that governments "control" and they don't feel they have enough control over a nomad, who is by their definition, a "transient."

  • What you can do about it. Resistance, being informed, informing the public, advocate for yourself, pray (yes, that is not a typo), exemplify your character and culture with pride.
  • Discussion.
